What is Mounjaro®?

Mounjaro® contains tirzepatide, a dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist prescribed for weight management alongside diet and exercise. It mimics two hormones your body naturally produces after eating. It helps you feel fuller for longer, reducing appetite and slowing digestion, so healthier portions feel like enough.

Mounjaro® FAQs

What is Mounjaro?

Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, a prescription medicine used for weight management alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, under the supervision of a registered practitioner. It comes as a once-weekly injection in a pre-filled pen.

Tirzepatide acts on two hormone pathways involved in appetite and blood sugar, GIP and GLP-1. It mimics hormones your body releases after eating, so you feel full sooner and stay satisfied for longer. It also slows how quickly your stomach empties.

Wegovy and Ozempic contain semaglutide, which acts on the GLP-1 pathway. Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, which acts on both GIP and GLP-1. All three are once-weekly injections. Which one suits you is a clinical decision, and your practitioner will talk you through the options at your consult.

Eligibility depends on your BMI, your medical history and any other medicines you take. Complete our short online assessment and a New Zealand registered doctor will review it with you at your free consult. Not everyone is eligible, and they will tell you honestly if treatment isn’t right for you.

One injection a week, on the same day each week, using a pre-filled pen. You can take it at any time of day, with or without food, and inject into your stomach, thigh or upper arm. Your practitioner shows you exactly how before you start.

The most common are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal pain. These are usually mild, most often occur when your dose increases, and tend to settle. Serious side effects are less common. Your practitioner will go through the full list with you, and it is also in the Consumer Medicine Information at medsafe.govt.nz.

Follow the instructions your prescriber gives you, and get in touch with your practitioner if you’re unsure. Never take two doses close together.

No. Mounjaro is an unfunded prescription medicine in New Zealand, which means you pay for it yourself. Your Higeia plan covers the medication at pharmacy cost with no mark-up from us.

From $595 a month, your plan includes your doctor consult, genuine Mounjaro dispensed through Chemist Warehouse at pharmacy cost, ongoing doctor support, personalised nutrition support, monthly check-ins and free discreet delivery. No hidden extras.
