What is Wegovy®?
Wegovy® contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist prescribed for weight management alongside diet and exercise. It mimics a hormone your body naturally produces after eating. It helps you feel fuller for longer, reducing appetite and slowing digestion, so healthier portions feel like enough.

Wegovy® FAQs
What is Wegovy?
Wegovy is a Medsafe-approved prescription medicine for weight management in adults. Its active ingredient is semaglutide, which belongs to a group of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists.
It’s prescribed alongside a reduced-energy diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.
How does Wegovy work?
Wegovy mimics a hormone your body produces naturally after eating, which acts on the parts of the brain that regulate appetite. The effect is that you feel full sooner and stay full longer, so eating less stops being a matter of constant willpower.
Is Wegovy right for me?
Wegovy is generally considered for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 and above alongside a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea.
It isn’t suitable for everyone. Your medical history, current medications and family history all factor in, which is why the decision sits with a practitioner rather than a form.
How do I get Wegovy in New Zealand?
Wegovy is prescription-only, so a New Zealand–registered practitioner has to assess you first. With Higeia that’s a free 10-minute consultation they’ll review your health history and tell you whether treatment is appropriate for you.
If it is, your prescription is arranged and your treatment is delivered to your door.
How is Wegovy taken?
Once a week, as an injection under the skin, using a pre-filled pen you use yourself at home. Most people inject into the abdomen, thigh or upper arm, rotating the site each week.
Take it on the same day each week, with or without food. Your practitioner will walk you through using the pen before you start.
What is the dosing schedule?
Wegovy starts low and increases gradually — usually beginning at 0.25 mg weekly and stepping up roughly every four weeks toward the maintenance dose.
That build-up isn’t a delay. It’s how your body is given time to adjust and how side effects are kept manageable. Your practitioner sets the pace based on how you’re going.
Are there side effects?
Yes. The most common are nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal discomfort, headache and fatigue, and these are usually most noticeable in the first weeks and after each dose increase. For most people they settle.
Less commonly, Wegovy can cause more serious problems including inflammation of the pancreas and gallbladder issues. Your practitioner will take you through the full picture and what to watch for.
Tell your care team about any side effect that concerns you. Most are manageable, and often the answer is adjusting your dose rather than stopping.
Can I take Wegovy with my other medications?
Sometimes, but it depends entirely on what they are. Wegovy slows how quickly your stomach empties, which can affect how other medicines are absorbed, and it needs particular care alongside diabetes medications such as insulin.
Bring a full list of everything you take to your consultation, including supplements and anything over the counter.
How do I store it?
In the fridge, between 2°C and 8°C, and never in the freezer. Once you’re using a pen it can be kept at room temperature for a limited period — your pharmacy will confirm exactly how long.
Higeia ships anything requiring refrigeration in temperature-controlled packaging with storage instructions included.
What happens if I stop taking it?
Wegovy manages appetite while you’re taking it. When treatment stops, appetite generally returns, and without other changes in place weight often follows.
That’s why the program is built around building habits alongside treatment rather than relying on it alone, and why any decision to stop or pause is one to make with your practitioner rather than on your own.
What support do I get with Higeia?
Ongoing oversight from your New Zealand–registered practitioner, follow-up consultations as your dose progresses, prescription and dosing management handled for you, nutrition support, and direct access to your care team whenever something comes up.
You’re not left with a pen and good luck.
How much does Wegovy cost with Higeia?
The consultation is free. If your practitioner prescribes a plan, Wegovy starts from $395 per month, covering your treatment, delivery, practitioner oversight, follow-up consultations and nutrition support.
Weight management treatments aren’t funded by Pharmac, so the program is privately funded
